Beautiful Butterfly!

Image
I think the highlight of last week was releasing one of our beautiful butterflies! Although it was chilly and rainy outside we all enjoyed watching the butterfly go from the inside of a habitat cage, to my raincoat, and then to the wet leaves of a hydrangea plant.  We discovered that it was a female butterfly...ask your child if they can remember how we can tell the difference (hint...dots on wings!).  We continue to move through the alphabet focusing on letter and sounds.  The kids now have a small collection of books that they can read independently.  I am also continuing to work on extending their "independent reading" time with classroom books.  In the beginning of the year, it is often difficult for kindergarteners to look at books or read beyond 10 minutes.  This group impressed me with their sustainability at the beginning of September and it continues to grow weekly!  Independent reading is my favorite time of day with these kids!  They love looking at the variety of

We made it through our first full week...whew!  I'm sure your child is as exhausted as I am!  In the pictures below you'll see a peak inside our week which included daily writing prompts, letter/sound lessons, discussions about patterns and shapes and fun play! Share these pictures with your child, ask them about the activities and friends!

Happy Friday! 🎉

I apologize for the photo dump but....these kids are so darn cute!  We had a great week and continue to work on building stamina and routines.  It is A LOT of information for kindergarteners!   This week we started learning about the life cycle of a butterfly.  On Wednesday, we watched one of our monarch caterpillars transform from hanging in a "J" to a bright green chrysalis!  We hope to see a Monarch butterfly in about 10 days!  I introduced a song called "Monarch Song" and we practiced it several days.  The kids got a copy of the song and did a wonderful job coloring the pictures.  I sent home their own copies and would love for them to sing it to you.  They may need a little help remembering the words...it goes to the tune of; "I'm a Little Teapot." In the next few weeks we will be reviewing letters and sounds.  This week we reviewed R and will continue through the alphabet (it will not be taught in ABC order).  We ended today with pattern block
