Beautiful Butterfly!

I think the highlight of last week was releasing one of our beautiful butterflies! Although it was chilly and rainy outside we all enjoyed watching the butterfly go from the inside of a habitat cage, to my raincoat, and then to the wet leaves of a hydrangea plant.  We discovered that it was a female butterfly...ask your child if they can remember how we can tell the difference (hint...dots on wings!).

We continue to move through the alphabet focusing on letter and sounds.  The kids now have a small collection of books that they can read independently.  I am also continuing to work on extending their "independent reading" time with classroom books.  In the beginning of the year, it is often difficult for kindergarteners to look at books or read beyond 10 minutes.  This group impressed me with their sustainability at the beginning of September and it continues to grow weekly!  Independent reading is my favorite time of day with these kids!  They love looking at the variety of books and are so excited to show me connections they made with the stories.

You will notice some pictures of flowers made from pattern blocks.  One of their tasks was to create a flower using the different pattern blocks.  I was so impressed with their different ideas.  We also made different patterns with the blocks.  Ask your child the difference between a growing and repeating pattern.

Finally, you will see some pictures of the kids playing a letter game in pairs.  This was a part of our whole school game day on Wednesday.  Pictures cannot even capture the absolute sweetness of this day!  The kids were SO supportive of each other and really took pride in being a good game partner.

 Have a great week ahead!
