Mid November Update

 It is hard to believe we are entering the middle of the month!  The past week was a bit choppy but we have been a busy bunch in kindergarten!  We continue move forward in literacy with a focus on decoding CVC words. As the kids become more confident with their letter and sound connections, I have been working on building their own awareness on what they can do independently.  Many of the kids have surprised themselves with how well they are able to write and/or label 3-4 letter words.  You may even notice your child "tapping" out the sounds of a word when reading or writing.  This is a strategy we use frequently.

The past week in math we've been focusing on the concept of "plus 1" and what that looks like in pictures and numbers. I have also introduced the "plus" and "equal" symbols. We are also looking at examples of : less than, greater than and equal to. The pictures below show 2 different math activities that we worked on in the past week.

Welcome to Kindergarten!

      Fall 2022  Hello Students and Families!      It is finally time for kindergarten!!  🎉 I am so excited to get to know all of you and hear about your summer adventures. My favorite activity I did with my family was visit lots of different beaches and take hikes with our dogs.  My two kids are also getting ready for school.  My son Matthew is 18 years old and will be heading off to Bates College in the fall….I haven’t quite wrapped my head around that yet!  Emma is 14 years old and is heading into 9 th grade.   Mr. Fox is also getting ready for school, he is a middle school teacher in Falmouth! End of Month Update

  It's hard to believe this is the last week of March! I am certainly excited for the snow to melt (goodbye to snow gear!!!) and warmer temperatures.  We are slowly but surly headed in the right direction!  ☀️  Last Monday, we celebrated the first day of spring by learning a new poem, Ode to Spring . We also brainstormed all of the exciting things that come with a new season.  Later in the week I introduced another poem for their poetry journals.  This poem was a familiar one for most of the kids, One, Two, Buckle My Shoe. It's so fun watching the kids proudly read along to a poem that they have previously learned.  Last week I introduced two new word wall words, was and little.   We are moving along with new books in reading groups as well as continuing to practice different reading strategies that come in handy when "stuck" on challenging words.  In writing, we wrote about feelings.  The kids drew different feelings cards (happy, sad,...

Fall Fun! 🍁

  This week we spent some time enjoying some of the special treats that fall brings. We started the week talking about apples. We read books about apples and did a couple apple related activities.  We ended the week with the best fall observation walk!  I took the kids to my favorite maple tree and with clipboards in hand, the kids spent time enjoying the leaves, studying the bark on the tree and then illustrated what they saw.  It was definitely the highlight of the our week!  Their observations and pure curiosity was just adorable! In literacy I introduced 3 new word wall words:  I, a, see .  I am using a lot of repetition and exposure when introducing new words.  The kids are building a little book collection in their book boxes.  I am working hard to instill the importance of pointing to each word as they read.  Speaking of reading...ask your child about the difference between echo reading and choral reading.   We've been doin...
