December Update!

November was certainly a quick month in kindergarten....and I'm sure December will fly by as well!  We came back from Thanksgiving break ready to roll.  This past week we learned two new poems and two new word wall words (he and she). We brainstormed and wrote about "colors around us" and in math we focused on sorting objects by different attributes.  I am always in awe of how much these 5 and 6 year olds can absorb!

I will be starting to send home paper copies of stories that we are reading whole group.  I would love for you to take some time and have your child read the stories to you.  We are working on pointing to each word as they read.  As children master stories, they tend to rush through the reading.  It is so important for emergent readers to have 1-1 correspondence as they read along.  If you notice your child rushing through the story, encourage them to slow down and point to the words.  I am also modeling a lot of different reading strategies.  If you notice your child is struggling with a word, encourage them to try to first look at the picture if that doesn't help, remind them to "stretch the sounds" out.  Digraphs can be tricky but in the case of th and sh I have been recently working on reminding them that those two letters make one sound. There are so many challenging components to early literacy and yet when it all comes together it is the best feeling in the world!  😊

This Wednesday, December 7 is an Early Release.  Village School has started the tradition of having "game day" on early release days.  Starting this Wednesday, I will be reaching out to 5-6 families to send in a simple game with your child.  They will be able to teach it to their classmates. Every child will have the opportunity to bring in a game this year!
